RAWALPINDI: The district of Rawalpindi is experiencing an alarming epidemic of conjunctivitis, popularly referred to as the “pink eye” condition, which is affecting people of all ages.

With a startling 40% of patients seeking treatment for this contagious eye ailment, government and private institutions are experiencing an inflow of patients, including women and children.

Conjunctivitis has been formally classified as an epidemic by medical professionals, who advise vigilance and preventative measures. Maintaining a safe distance from infected people and avoiding touch with their personal objects, such as handkerchiefs, towels, and pillows, are important pieces of advise. In order to protect the eyes from the heat and sun when outdoors, doctors often advise wearing safety goggles.

Government agencies, private businesses, educational institutions, shopping malls, and factories have all felt the effects of this epidemic, which has resulted in a noticeable decline in attendance. Conjunctivitis is brought on by a virus, according to Dr. Ayaz Haider, registrar at the District Headquarters Hospital. It results in corneal scarring, redness, discomfort, inflammation, and discharge from the eyes.

He added that patients are recommended to periodically rinse their eyes with cold water and apply cold compresses without touching or rubbing the eyes with their hands. However, there are easy yet effective ways to treat conjunctivitis. He stated that when going outside, it is advised to wear black or green sunglasses and to use tissue papers for eye care that is properly disposed of.
