On Friday, New York City’s subway system and airports were partially shut down as a result of heavy rains that fell overnight in the northeastern United States.
In social media posts, travellers were shown wading through water that was well beyond the tops of their shoes, prompting LaGuardia Airport to close one of its terminals.
Eric Adams, the mayor of New York, pleaded with residents to stay indoors since the streets were blocked and the subway stations were inundated.
“Stay at home if you are at home. Because parts of our subways are flooded and it’s exceedingly difficult to go around the city, he advised people who were at work or school to take refuge for the time being.

Images from all throughout New York revealed congested traffic, cars partially immersed in water, and several major roadways entirely closed.Inundated business owners worked to preserve their goods and drive the water back into the streets.
Numerous lines in Brooklyn were shut down as a result of the floods, which also affected the extensive New York subway system.
Ahmed Abdou, a 50-year-old cab driver who is originally from Egypt, criticized officials for their inability to deal with what he claimed was a common occurrence.
He declared, “The city’s subway system is appalling.
“Every year, all of the storms arrive at the same time. We ought to be more prepared for it, he remarked.
However, Rohit Aggarwala Overall, the city’s environmental protection commissioner claimed that the pace of global warming was outpacing the city’s ability to strengthen its defenses.
“Climate change is the cause of this altering weather pattern. And the unfortunate truth is that our infrastructure cannot keep up with the pace at which our climate is changing,” Overall remarked.
The 8.5 million-person metropolis of New York, together with its heavily populated suburbs, including Long Island to the east and the Hudson River valley to the north, were placed under an official state of emergency by Governor Kathy Hochul.
Flooding was predicted by the National Weather Service through late Friday due to rainfall rates of up to two inches (5.1 centimeters) per hour.
It predicted that Friday’s total accumulation might reach seven inches (18 centimeters).
“Excessive runoff will likely result in scattered to numerous instances of flash flooding in urban and poor drainage areas, as well as along quick-responding small rivers and streams,” the report stated.
A low pressure system in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, which draws moist air from the sea, is what caused the rain.

Residents in both boroughs were advised to exercise extra caution after some of the heaviest flooding occurred on Friday.
According to Zach Iscol, commissioner of New York City Emergency Management, “If you live in these boroughs or in a basement apartment or in a flood-prone area, please make sure you have plans and are prepared to move to higher ground.”
Water surged down the stairs and through the ceilings of certain stations in the subway, one of the biggest systems in the world with 420 stops and more than 30 lines.
